#18 NAKAYAMA Kiita Bench stone
One of those stones that once used is never forgotten.
A big beefy example of a Nakayama with black crystal components that
sparkle in the light and can be seen as individual crystals with the naked
eye in the kawa skin, a soft but complex foggy grain pattern, and a pleasing
yellow kiita color that cannot be doctored or copied and a hand chiseled back.
There are two opposing corners that are clipped which harbor the kawa
examples. There are faint inclusions here and there that lead no where,
save for the one at the lower end which wraps around the end and back
This kiita could really be serve as an excellent sample of the hand saw work
seen in the other tomae kiita and suita from this group with its hand sawn sides
which may have been created right at the mine site. This type of saw work,
common during the Edo, Meiji and Tashio Periods, was phased out around the
beginning of the Showa Period in the 1920's. This stone would benefit by
sealing the sides and back and being mounted on a wooden base.
I have no reason to believe that this stone was not mined in the 1800s,
every indicator leads in that direction. It is commonly known that the earlier
diggings of each mine source was first made near the ridge line of the
particular mines property. At the higher elevations the stones were slightly
softer, hard enough but softer and more user friendly. This stone matches
With this stone and all of the other kiita
I have test honed them on a vintage 1960s Henckels straight razor
to a shave ready state, taking but a few minutes I then have test shaved
with it. The results were barber like smooth and close.
The stone (toishi) has been lapped flat and the corners and edges
beveled. I have not lacquered the side or back but I will be happy to do so at
no extra costs using Deft Semi-Gloss Brushing Lacquer which is a thin but
effective coat that sheds water.
All of my stones come with a tested and appropriately sized tomonaguara
slurry stone, and a money back guarantee minus the return shipping.
