#248 Ohira semi soft suita w/ renge
This is a fantastic double sided stone for knives or tools plus it
will quickly hone razors to shave ready states as I have just proved to
myself after honing a vintage Wade & Butcher blade and shaving
with it. For hard steel knives, with light pressure
stainless or high carbon steel just rolls off the blade leaving
super sharp edges with a lovely hazy finish to the bevels.
A unique stone in that it has loads and loads of patterned
traditional red renge radiolarian particles along with bits and
pieces here and there of black renge on one side of the stone,
while on the other side just the opposite with lots of black renge
and scatterings of red renge. With a diamond plate as a nagura the
slurry from the red renge side is pink and from the other is yellow.
The Ohira mine discovered the black renge in the second half
of the 20th Century and it is the only mine I know of that has
black renge which is actually a darker version of the red radiolarian.
This stone as you can see has a cream base on one side
and a buff tone to the other side that is not really kiita but still
very pleasant with a yellow slurry. Both sides are flat but the buff
side has a couple of areas at one corner and one end that have a
low spot that was not lapped fully.
The stone (toishi) has been lapped flat and the
corners and edges beveled unless otherwise noted. All of my
stones come with a tested and appropriately sized tomonaguara
slurry stone, and a money back guarantee minus the return shipping.
