Okudo Shiro Suita #52
This very hard white shiro suita tennen toishi has areas of fine momiji along
with the lightest mist of kan. A very fast cutting stone that like so many other
very hard stones excels if you use a slurry under your blade as you can see
in the video below. The Okudo mine is famous for their suita stones and this
is one fantastic example.
At 222 x 80 x 50mm thick this huge mass of sharpening stone is referred to
as a grade/size 24 stone which means that in the old days of the mines when
stone stock was hand carried down the mountain to the shop in the valley,
an average worker could carry about 24 of this size stones at a time. This is
the type and size of stone is used in professional shops where a lot of
demand is put on their stones. I consider this Okudo to be the hardest and
finest of my suita stones.
The toishi has been lapped perfectly flat and the edges beveled.
