Vintage Narutaki deep dark gousa type kamisori toishi.
From one of the oldest and most famous mines, this stone has almost unlimited sharpening abilities. It can be
used as a final sharpening with a light diluted slurry or with just clear water as a polishing stone. I have shave
tested this stone with a light slurry and came away with a perfectly smooth barber like shave with no pulling or
irritation of any kind. Although a dense stone it is forgiving and very fast cutting with a diamond plate generated
slurry or with a tomo nagura or with white Aichi nagura. I will include a tested/matching tomonagura with this
There is a curious blue meridian line around all four sides which represents a concentrated mineral layer, it is
totally solid and dates to the origins of the stone. The stone has been lapped flat and the sides have been
sanded smooth. This is a very pure stone from front to back with a nice flash of Narutaki skin on the back.
This stone and the other kamisori toishi on my site are part a private collection assembled in Japan over the past
40 years in the area around Toyama by a collector of shaving implements. Many of the hones were actually used
by barbers, some dating to the 1920s or earlier, while others were simply prepared by the miners as razor hones
as evidenced by the size and fine quality of the stones grit composition.
